War and embodied memory: becoming disabled in Sierra Leone

Maria Berghs' War and Embodied Memory is not always an easy read but in spite of some of the horrendous content it is certainly an important and convincing book. Its analysis of extensive fieldwork describes how a community of amputated (and other war-wounded) people was created as a result of the horrific civil war in Sierra Leone (1991-2002), of which the dismembered (together with the child soldiers) became the symbol.
