Mobilizing Mercy. A history of the Canadian Red Cross

In 2016, a three-day conference on the history of humanitarianism in general, and the Red Cross especially, was organized in Adelaide, Australia. Listening to the speeches, I happily concluded that the days of uncritical, hagiographic Red Cross histories were definitively over. Sadly, though, a recent book on the Dutch Red Cross gave me a rude awakening, but since then this excellent book by a former Red Cross employee, Sarah Glassford, on the Canadian Red Cross Society (CRCS), has restored hope.
