Complicated war trauma and care of the wounded - the Israeli experience in medical care and humanitarian support of Syrian refugees

To give some perspective on our review, in 2008 the US Army Medical department published, 'War Surgery in Afghanistan and Iraq, A Series of Cases 2003-2007', an atlas of war trauma cases, civilian and military, gleaned from ongoing American wars in Southwest Asia. The editors (two of whom are the authors of this review) sifted through hundreds of cases from Afghanistan and Iraq to select 85 photo-illustrated teaching cases which best presented concepts regarding the acute management of the burn, blast and penetrating injuries so characteristic of twenty-first-century conflicts. They took advantage of graphic documentation made readily available by the advent of hand-held digital cameras. Suddenly, acute surgical interventions could be easily and more accurately illustrated than any previous attempts with black-and-white film or paintbrush.
