Novel Green Hemoglobin-Mediated Biosynthesis of Gold Nanoparticles

The novel biological methods for synthesizing the nanoparticles have always been of great interest as an alternate to energy intensive chemical methods. Here we first time report the synthesis of biogenic gold nanoparticles by using hemoglobin as a reducing agent through a simple bottom-up approach. The exposure of hemoglobin to the aqueous solution of chloroauric acid at room temperature results in the slow reduction of gold ions to gold metal leading to the formation of gold nanoparticles. The gold nanostructures are mainly quasi-spherical and triangular in morphology. The kinetics of gold nanoparticles synthesis reveals the absorption in NIR region which is of topical interest for hyperthermia cancer therapy (HCT). The attachment of hemoglobin as a capping agent might enhance the biocompatibility of gold nanoparticles.
