3. MULTIPLEX DIE CONTAINERS

Except for very few cases, when monoplex die containers are used, most often, die containers are compounded or multilayered by shrinking one cylinder into the other to increase the strength [25, 28, 29]. The elasto-plastic process of auto-frettage is also used to achieve this [21, 29]. Fig.2.1 shows various configurations of compounded dies. In addition to increasing strength, die compounding also increases the die stiffness which reduces die expansion.
