The German sea rescue service DGzRS said it had ordered two 28m Class sea rescue cruisers with tenders from leading builder Fassmer Werft in the west. At the same time it has booked two 10m Class lifeboats from the now regularly used east German shipyard Werft Tamsen Maritim in Rostock. They are all for service from 2020 and will replace boats which will, by that time, have been in service for some 30 years at opposite ends of a German coastine which stretches 2,400 kms along the North Sea and Baltic from the Netherlands in the west to Poland in the east. The Fassmer cruisers, designated SK40 and SK41, will be the fourth and fifth in a new 28m Class introduced by the DGzRS three years ago and replace proven 27.5m boats from the 1980s. SK40 will replace the 31 year old Atfried Krupp on the island of Borkum in the North Sea when it enters service in 2020. Just where SK41 will serve is not yet known.
