The Vlissingen-based Royal Schelde shipyard was established in 1875. It became part of the DamenrnShipyards Group in the year 2000. In October 2008, the shipyard received its current official name, Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding. Currently, the yard is building three slightly bigger corvettes for the Moroccan navy and another series of four patrol vessels for the Royal Netherlands Navy. These patrol vessels are suitable for tasks in conflicts of lower intensity, such as monitoring shipping and patrolling of littoral waters. They can be electrically propelled at low speed.rnThe namegiving of the KRI Frans Kaisiepo took place on June 28th 2008 during a strictly non-alcoholic ceremony, respecting the customers' faith. Instead of breaking a champagne bottle, a stone bottle with sacred water was used. The Indonesian Navy envisions a total fleet of 24 corvettes similar to this series of four. The following vessels would thenrnbe built in a state-owned shipyard in Surabaya - which is also the homeport of the KRI Frans Kaisiepo - with the support of Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding.
