According to Post, the issue with existing VDRs was that these devices were big, bulky and very complex in regard to footprint and interfacing, as they were initially designed for the much smaller market of passenger vessels. "There was no manufacturer who used his own electronics. In the early days, due to the limited volume of the market segment, VDRs were designed from standard PC parts. From an entre-preneurial spirit's point of view, I saw the need for the design of a more compact system with dedicated 'embedded' and thus more stable electronics, user friendly software and a more versatile capsule protecting the recorded data. After a two year development period, by the end of 2006 our new VDR received the Wheelmark certificate from the Bundesamt fur Schifffahrt und Hydrographie in Hamburg. By now, over 2000 ships are equipped with NetWave VDRs and protective capsules, and demand from other manufacturers to source NetWave products is strongly increasing."
