The possibility of a trans-arctic shipping route has intrigued seafarers since the days of the first Arctic explorers, as it would shorten the distance between the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean significantly. For centuries a shipping passage across the top of the Arctic has fired the imagination of explorers and has been seen as crucial by military strategists. Yet this famous stretch of water seemed out of bounds to international commercial shipping because of its ice cover.
