As part of an extensive one billion euro investment plan, launched in 2007, international contractor Van Oord, specialised in dredging, marine engineering and offshore projects (oil, gas and wind), took delivery of two backhoe dredgers built by Shipyard De Donge in 2009 and 2010. Other newbuilds in the investment programme include a trailing suction hopper dredger, a flexible fallpipe vessel, six sand transport barges, four self-propelled split barges, two water injection vessels and the self-propelled cutter suction dredger named Athena, which will be featured in Maritime by Holland Magazine later this year. By the end of 2010 Van Oord adopted another comprehensive investment scheme for 2011-2015 of one billion euro.
