That's when the revision to MARPOL Annex VI comes into force and sulfur limits are reduced to 1.0% in specific Emission Control Areas (ECAs).rnFollowing the California Air Resources Board's July 2009 low sulfur regulation, loss of propulsion incidents skyrocketed in 2009, moving from an average of 23.6 incidents per year for all of California between 2004 and 2008 to 67 in 2009. It is a daunting thought that by 2020 the commercial fleet will have to comply with a global bunker specification of 0.5% sulfur. It is a seismic change that will redefine the future of shipping.
