The method involves determining actual driving conditions of a motor vehicle at preset time points. Diversion situation of the driver of the motor vehicle is determined. The actual driving conditions after the diversion situation of the driver are compared with future driving conditions predicted before the diversion situation, where the difference of the actual driving conditions after the diversion situation with the prediction before the diversion situation forms a measure for the criticality of the actual driving conditions. An independent claim is also included for a drive assistance system for identifying a critical driving condition of a motor vehicle in road traffic.
