NORTH AMERICA ECA ADOPTED BY IMO

By 2012, the more than 7,000 ships that visit U.S. ports on an annual basis will face stricter sulfur oxide, nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emission standards, following the adoption of amendments to MARPOL Convention by IMO's Marine Environment Protection Committee to formally establish a North American Emission Control Area (ECA). The ECA, stretching 200 miles off the coast of the contiguous U.S. and Canada, as well as the islands of Hawaii and France's Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, would be the largest of its kind in the world. ECAs currently exist in the North Sea and Baltic Sea.
