Continuing trends should see the introduction of ever larger cruiseships, and Wartsilae has teamed up with Kvaerner Masa-Yards to create a total solution for the cruiseship of the future. This new propulsion and machinery concept, the Combined Diesel-Electric and Diesel-Mechanical (CODED) machinery system, features a hybrid propulsion configuration with two electric pods and one mechanically driven feathering cp propeller. The largest panamax cruiseships now measure over 90 000gt, and ships of this type of over 100 000gt have been proposed. Post-panamax vessels are also providing an increasing share of capacity as owners have found the economies of scale to be highly profitable. Service speed as well as size is on the increase. The latest Panamax cruiseships having service speeds of 22-24kts and trial speeds in excess of 25kts. This trend is continuing and the next step may well see demands for speed trials of 26-27kts to allow service speeds of 25kts.
