Because fuel cells use hydrogen and oxygen to create electricity, there is little pollution and the only by-product is pure, 'drinkable' water. These benefits, particularly pertinent to advancing the all electric ship concept and to eliminating smokestack emissions, have provoked a number of companies in the marine market to embark on fuel cell systems development for a wide variety of vessel types. Anuvu Fuel Cell Inc, for instance, has produced a fuel cell powered water taxi that is being trialled on San Francisco Bay, while other organisations, are looking at fuel cells primarily for shipboard 'hotel' loads, but also for propulsion.
