This incident concerns an 89 500dwt crude/black oil tanker built in 1987 with a Burmeister and Wain 5L80MC slow speed engine, it also had Daihatsu diesel generators burning blended residual fuel and a single water tube boiler for heating and cargo pumping. The vessel only had two main bunker tanks and, for operational reasons, routinely had to co-mingle fuel from different bunker supplies. The vessel arrived in Hamburg after a voyage from the Mid East Gulf and took bunkers from a reputable supplier in the port. These bunkers were mixed with a quantity of the bunkers remaining from an earlier supply in a ratio of about 60:40 in one of the bunker tanks, the other tank containing only the new Hamburg fuel.
