TROUBLESPOT FAULTS IN SAFETY SYSTEMS FPSO EXPLOSION REVEALS

A recent casualty report, published by the Danish Maritime Authority's Division for Marine Accidents, is a case in point. The report concerns the 160 OOOgt FPSO (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading) unit Maersk Ngujima-yin, working in the Vincent field in deepwater about 36km offshore in the ecologically sensitive Ningaloo Marine Park off Western Australia. In April 2009, about six months after the unit was commissioned, a HP gas compressor in module M60, located about 50m forward of midships, experienced a catastrophic failure. This caused a hydrocarbon gas leak that auto ignited.
