Bunker-related engine damages may be attributed to the deteriorating quality of fuels in storage. A clean and stable fuel can produce excessive sludge and sediments if left heated in ship's storage for long periods or if mixed with incompatible products. Leaking steam coils and damaged bulkheads are among the common sources of water contamination in bunkers.
