Eliminating the Risk of Failure

Damage reports relating to low speed engines on ships registered by ClassNK show a large incidence of tur-bocharger failure. Among the various failure modes identified, fires in the exhaust gas manifold are regarded as especially serious as they can cause the turbocharger to overrun or even explode. Although manufacturers are aware of the problem and working to find ways of preventing such failures, to date there is no evidence of the incidents declining.
