In June of last year, while proceeding in ballast, the bridge team on a 14 000gt product carrier suddenly became aware that the vessel had lost control of its rudder. The vessel was immediately stopped and the cause investigated. Activating the emergency steering mechanism brought no result. Examination over the side (!) revealed that the vessel had in fact lost its rudder, and the product carrier was towed to Jakarta, Indonesia.
