Ap moller-maersk has signed an agreement with Hyundai Heavy Industries for the delivery of 18 container ships, each of 4500TEU capacity, in 2011 and 2012. The ships are designed to meet the highest demands for safe and economic transportation in such areas as the Eastern Mediterranean, Africa, and Latin America. In addition, each vessel will be equipped with a waste heat recovery system which will recycle excess heat from the exhaust and generate energy for propulsion of the vessel or on-board electricity consumption. The resultant reduction in fuel consumption will cut emissions. This is the first time that an Asian shipyard has installed a waste heat recovery system of this size and efficiency. According to Senior Vice President Michel Deleuran, Maersk Line's Head of Network & Product: 'We are very happy with this order. These vessels are part of our fleet renewal and development programme. They will enable us to continue to offer competitive container shipping based on a modern, economical, and environmentally friendly fleet.' Meanwhile the company is rumoured to be planning a second huge order for 16 vessels of 7000TEU capacity to be constructed by DSME.
