Oasis Takes To The Water

ON 21ST November 2008 the 225 000gt cruise ship Oasis of the Seas, set to be the world's largest, was floated out at STX Europe's shipyard in Turku, formerly Aker Yards. STX Europe has on order two huge luxury cruise vessels of the Oasis class to be delivered to Royal Caribbean in 2009 and 2010. As the world's largest cruise vessels they represent an enormous step into the future with their bold design, daring innovation and technological advancements. Costing some US$1.24Bn and with accommodation for 5400 passengers, Oasis of the Seas is 46.9m wide and 360.9m long; height above the water line is 65m. Propulsion will be by three ABB Azipods with electrical power supplied by six Waertsilae' 46 common rail diesel engines driving generators that form the ship's power plant.
