Yantai Raffles First Commercial Lift

The yantai Raffles Shipyard Ltd (YRS) in Shandong, China, carried out the first commercial lift by its 20 000t capacity Taisun gantry crane in November. The lift was of the 14 000t deck box for COSLPi-oneer, COSL Drilling Europe AS's semi-submersible drilling rig. The deck box was being mated onto the columns and hull of the rig in one single operation. The mating operation was successfully executed in spite of the strong winds and scattered snow of Shandong's unpredictable winter. Using Taisun, the mating operation is able to take place within a safe and controllable environment, a departure from traditional rig-building methods where the assembly of the rig takes place in open waters, leaving it vulnerable to adverse weather conditions.
