Speed at sea, as most readers will have noticed, has become terribly infra dig, with container ships now fiercely competing to make the slowest passages on their oceanic routes. We are supposed to be very encouraged about this trend, which is hugely supported by the nose-ringed environmentalists who dwell among us and is largely justified on the grounds that operating a ship at less than half-speed is a contribution to saving the planet. The fact that it is saving a lot of expensive fuel and eating up the surplus of containerships still being extruded by the far eastern shipyards, is a mere coincidence, and you better believe it. More of that particular aspect later.
