An elegant and communicative individual, Pacha was born in 1962 in Barcelona, Spain, where he developed a fascination with ships and shipping at an early age and this, in a multitude of forms, has been a guiding force in his life ever since. Growing up in the Spanish port city of Barcelona it is not surprising that he chose a life in shipping. In the beginning he had a seagoing career, serving first as a navigator and then master on board various merchant vessels with a variety of shore appointments in between. He finally came ashore permanently in 1991 and over the next few years was appointed to several positions within the Spanish Government, including Harbour Master, Vice President of a Port Authority, and eventually a Regional Director of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.
