Microorganisms are widely accepted as the oldest known form of life on the Earth and can be found in almost every single environment on the face of the planet. In the modern world, microorganisms play a huge role in everyday things that we take for granted. It is common to see regular advertisements in newspapers, magazines and on television that extol the virtues of pro-biotic yoghurt drinks which contain millions of 'good bacteria'. They are also critical to water treatment, generation of energy and in pioneering genetic engineering techniques.
