Ⅱ.Diesel Generator Engine Backwashing Strainer Failure

The vessel's diesel generator engine's strainer has a backwashing mechanism and the top part of its driving gear is designed so that it's rotation can be visually confirmed from outside.The crew found that there was no rotation even when backwashing was in progress.Since the backwashing nozzle of the LO backwashing strainer was not rotating,the driving mechanism was overhauled.It was found that the spiral gear of the gear shaft was worn,and a large amount of metal powder was found inside the gear shaft casing.The reduction gear was also overhauled,and here again,a lot of metal powder was found.(Photo 2 and 3)The spiral gear on the gear shaft was severely worn,and its teeth were almost gone.(Photo 4).
