The method involves receiving scroll duration values from sensor measuring scroll pins (101) arranged on a ring that is attached to a flywheel or a crankshaft. The scroll duration values corresponding to respective harmonic frequencies are determined (106). A torque value is estimated (107) from combustion of harmonic amplitude values. A comparison is performed (108, 110) from the estimated combustion of harmonic amplitude values with a threshold value to detect any engine failures. A linear combination of harmonic amplitude values is realized during the combustion process. An independent claim is also included for a device for detecting fault of a combustion engine system.
