Seagull develops competence management for dry bulk ships

Seagull has introduced a computer-based evaluation tool that can be used to improve the competency of officers on board dry bulk carriers. The Bulker Industry Training Standard (BITS) is a pre-defined competence management system for the maintenance and operation of these vessels and for dry bulk cargo handling. It provides a benchmark for industry competence and can be adapted to reflect advanced training standards developed by individual operators, Seagull managing director Roger Ringstad said. The Norwegian company worked with leading shipping organisations on harmonised competence standards. BITS includes coverage of cargo-specific competencies for coal, grain and iron ore. Additional cargo types are to be incorporated in the next version.
