Ships operating to and from European ports will need to monitor carbon dioxide (CO_2) emissions within two years following the European Council's approval of new shipping regulations. As highlighted in the April/May issue of Marine Electronics & Communications, shipowners will need to organise, monitor and report some form of verification of the CO_2 levels emitted from their vessels. This is part of the EU's strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from all sectors by 2050. The European Council voted in the regulation on 28 April and it will formally come into force on 1 July 2015. According to classification society Lloyd's Register (LR), all vessels of more than 5,000gt trading to, from and between EU ports will be required to carry on board a CO_2 monitoring plan that has been reviewed by a third party verifier. This will be enforced from 31 August 2017.
