Subsea 7 improves crew welfare on diving support vessel

Subsea 7 has boosted crew welfare on diving support vessels (DSVs) by combining onboard WiFi with a VSAT system. The subsea engineering and vessel operating group contracted Cobham Satcom dealer Livewire Connections to install the system on 120m versatile DSV Seven Discovery. It installed a Sea-Tel Ku-band VSAT antenna and provides the satellite communications airtime. The complete turnkey solution provides reliable Internet access for the crew and contractors while they are working on board. The divers working on DSV Seven Discovery are saturation divers, who spend a prolonged period of time in a pressurised capsule with very little interaction with the outside. Livewire's VSAT enables the divers to keep in touch with friends, families and colleagues from inside the capsule. The WiFi Internet access can be the only interaction they have with people other than the divers who are also enclosed within the restricted capsules, said Subsea 7 chief engineer Mike Derrick.
