摘要

On February 7, 2008, 13 people died and 40 were badly burned in a sugar refinery explosion in Georgia. The company was faced with loss of life, severely reduced production capability and market share, and millions of dollars in rebuilding costs and federal fines. This incident has crystallized the need for a more risk-aware industry. Sadly, it has also earned the company a not-so-sweet spot on Multinational Monitor magazine's "Top 10 Worst Corporations of 2008." While it may not be possible to completely eliminate combustible dust from the confectionery process or the facilities where product is manufactured, there are prevention and control measures that can be taken to reduce the frequency and severity of fires and explosions that dust can cause. Simple, cost-effective solutions can help to diminish the likelihood of unnecessary property damage and business interruption-something no amount of insurance can cover.
