While the market remains understandably mired in some uncertainty due to the pandemic, discussions with shiprepair yards worldwide reveal a growing sense of optimism, particularly about the second half of this year. Despite the impacts of Covid-19 on the global economy, ship operations have continued more or less as normal and in some cases, particularly the container market, freight rates have reached levels not seen for many years. This encouraged some owners to defer drydocking work to extend revenue earning opportunities, impacting routine repair and maintenance activity over much of last year. These vessels still require their docking, however, and the re-booking of deferred work has been reflected in a steady stream of business over the first three months of this year and a head of steam building up behind forward bookings for later on, across a wide range of vessel types.
