ILSAC AND API CATEGORY DIFFERENCES

This table presents the key differences between the API and ILSAC oil specifications over the past decade. As you look over the table, many of the differences may seem to be minor. It shows that API's Energy Conserving and Resource Conserving categories are closely matched to the automaker's ILSAC spec. For the heavier non-ILSAC viscosity grades, however, little more than passing engine test results are required.
