The LNG shipping industry is justifiably proud of its safety record. During the 45-year history of LNG carrier operations over 50,000 LNG shipments have been successfully delivered without any breach of a cargo containment system or notable spillage of cargo. One industry practice that has contributed to this exemplary record is the use of escort tugs to accompany and assist LNG carriers in port waters. LNG carriers are at the greatest risk of collision and grounding in the port zone and LNG terminals specify the use of escort tugs to minimise such risks.
