Obsessive regulation on ship emissions, said the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) president Spyros Polemis, could backfire badly on the environment, pushing more carbon emissions into the atmosphere than were emitted under a previous regime. A naval architect and marine engineer, Mr Polemis knows what he is talking about, but his voice, urging moderation on the regulatory front, is but a whisper by comparison with the shouts from those urging precipitate action on climate change, lest we be roasted or drowned.
