In mid-January Northern Light Technology decided to move away from serving the general public to dedicate all its resources to serving the large organizations that had already become the major market for the company's products. Shortly thereafter came an announcement that Northern Light had been acquired by divine inc., a company with expertise in collaboration, interaction, and knowledge solutions for the enterprise. On its heels, there was another announcement, from Yahoo!, that it would be offering a Premium Document Search service powered by Northern Light. In announcing the shift toward the custom Web search and content marketplace, Northern Light CEO David Seuss said that the business model for free advertising-supported public Web search had not been developing for them. They made a strategic decision to discontinue free public access to their Web search in order to focus resources and investment on those parts of their business that are growing rapidly.
