A Question of Protocol

What are lighting controls protocols, and why does anyone care about them? The answer to the first part of the question is discussed in the material that follows, while the answer to the second part of the question depends on who you are. While lighting controls protocols, or more precisely lighting controls communication protocols, are of great importance to lighting equipment manufacturers and system designers, when properly implemented their functions are transparent to the users of the system. What they provide is the means to seamlessly integrate and control the multitude of lighting system components, as well as allow communication between the lighting control system and other building automation systems (i.e., HVAC, security, safety, etc.). As is the case with many aspects of the emerging world of digital technology, a peek below the surface reveals a complex maze of layers and technical jargon, all designed to provide a final product that is both simple to use and powerful in application. The key elements are power and flexibility, both in system design and implementation, and in operation. The over-riding trend is towards ever increasing user expectations, needs and requirements, along with equipment capabilities and performance.
