The production of lighting equipment is a small percentage of the total manufacturing industry compared to the production of other building materials like steel and concrete. Nevertheless, lighting equipment sales in the United States were approximately $30 billion in 1997, an increase of 46.7 percent since 1992 (www.census.gov). This statistic also reflects a huge increase in the consumption of raw materials over a short amount of time. Of additional concern, most spaces don't last as long as the average indoor lighting fixture (approximately 20 years). Thus, when the use of a space changes, the leftover lighting equipment generally ends up in a landfill.
