The latest addition to the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore has a secret life after dark. Known as the Brown Center, in honor of benefactors Eddie and Sylvia Brown, the 61,000 sq ft home for the Digital Arts department transforms itself into a luminous gem after the sun goes down. This parallelogram structure with translucent skin was designed by Charles Brickbauer of Baltimore-based architects, Ziger/Snead. Glenn Shrum, Ziger/Sneed's in-house lighting and exhibit designer, and Alfred R. Borden, president of The Lighting Practice, Inc. (TLP), Philadelphia, created the lighting design for the building's exterior glazed facades, its soaring 60-ft high atrium, interior galleries and the architectural and performance lighting systems for its 550-seat auditorium.
