It's been said that every good idea begins with a single person, and the idea for an Illuminating Engineering Society, as we have many times heard, was the brainchild of one Louis B. Marks. Nevertheless, if an idea is to come to fruition, others must endorse and embrace it. While it was Marks's idea, the first person he approached for support-was his friend Van Rensselaer Lansingh. Marks and Lansingh were both electrical engineers in New York City in 1905. Marks was in professional practice, while Lansingh was an executive with the Holophane Glass Co., then headquartered in New York.
