As the run in for the General Election begins, political attention has been focussed on high speed train travel. The recent announcement by Network Rail that it supports a London/Birmingham/Manchester/Scotland link is good news for the Midlands and North West, but not so good for those who live alongside the East Coast Main Line. However it will be ten years before any construction work begins and a lot of rolling stock will pass over rails before then!rnNor should any discussion on high speed rail be allowed to detract from discussion about the need for investment in other areas of transport -including light rail.
