Shenyang tramway opens three lines in time for 12th National Games

The first three lines of Shenyang's six-line 70km (43.5-mile) tramway network opened on 15 August, in time for the 12th National Games that began on 31 August. Lines 1, 2 and 5 opened simultaneously and were expected to carry some 7.2m passengers over the two weeks of China's games. CNR Changchun has supplied 30 trams nicknamed 'Dolphins' due to their sleek design: 20 (001-20) are 70% low-floor three-section trams and ten (021-30) are 100% five-section low-floor. The 34.4m 100% low-floor cars can accommodate up to 360 passengers (65 seated), while the 70% low-floor trams are 28.8m long with space for 300. Stainless steel body sections have been glued rather than welded to save weight.
