'Smile in the city' is the theme of the 2015 UITP World Congress and Exhibition, to be held in Milan. More than 2000 people including political decisionmakers, public transport leaders and representatives from operators, authorities, industry and academia are expected to gather in the Italian city from 8-10June. Two years after the last event in Geneva, the theme of the latest congress is covered by the acronym SMILE - Sustainability, Mobility, Innovation, Lifestyle and Economy. With challenges including urbanisation, climate change, finding alternative funding sources, adopting a more-customer-oriented approach and ensuring there are adequate regulatory frameworks, UITP believes public transport must perform better and more efficiently. In 2009, the sector set itself the ambitious target of doubling the market share of public transport worldwide by 2025 compared to 2005 - and progress so far will be assessed at the Milan event.
