January was to see resumption of tram service on Charlotte's Gold line, including its extension to Johnson C. Smith University. A precise opening date was to follow as TAUT went to press. Charlotte is the most populous city in North Carolina (population 885 700) and the second-largest banking centre in the US. In November 2007 Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) opened its light rail Blue Line (Lynx), 70 years after the city's first-generation tramway was closed. The standard-gauge line was extended in 2018 and now totals 31.1km (19.3 miles). It is worked by 42 Siemens S70 LRVs (up from 16 when the line opened) that carry 29 900 passengers/day and linking the University of North Carolina at its north end through the city centre to South Boulevard near Interstate 485.
