Technology for Electromagnetic Stirring of Aluminum Reverberatory Furnaces

The benefits of circulation in aluminum reverberatory furnacesrnare well documented and include higher productivity, and reducedrnfuel consumption and dross generation. One popular method tornachieve the benefits of circulation is electromagnetic stirring.rnThat said, this technology has certain drawbacks preventing itsrnuniversal acceptance: high capital cost, high operating costrn(especially power consumption and maintenance of water cooledrncopper tubes), reluctance to use water in close proximity to moltenrnmetal, and in some cases the inability to operate through fullrnthickness refractory hearths. This paper describes a technologyrnwhich amounts to the reinvention of traditional electromagneticrnstirring devices, effectively addressing all of the above negativernaspects of traditional systems. In this paper we will describe howrnthese issues are addressed and results documented in recentrninstallations.
