Midwinter, the conference that exists, by official policy, for "expediting the business" of the American Library Association (ALA). Plenty of that goes on in some 2000 or more meetings. While there will be plenty of entertaining and educating at Midwinter, too, it is a chance to see your colleagues act out the politics of librarianship. So choose your favorite round table, the one on Social Responsibilities or Government Documents, and observe at their meetings, or sit in on your favorite ALA or division committee (Intellectual Freedom and Legislation are always of interest) and learn what ALA is all about.
