The chapters follow a natural progression, but Frey encourages readers to skip among them according to individual needs and explains how her instructions may be tailored to different projects at any stage. Practical advice such as how to adjust recipes, interview family members, research recipes with unknown provenance, and interpret world or regional recipes are balanced and illustrated with stories from Frey and others. Three appendixes offer more in-depth examples of how to apply the book's instructions by examining how Frey adjusted, researched, and explored the overall legacy of a family recipe.
