Flying from Armenia to Moscow to John F. Kennedy International Airport in March 2016, Chris Bohjalian stopped at the airport bar for a smoky glass of arak and was suddenly struck by three things: the miracle of aviation, the grandeur of the Russian soul, and the dark beauties of alcohol. From there he leapt to imagining a flight attendant waking up next to a dead body, and he was off and running with a new work that delivers visceral thrills as it ponders crucial contemporary issues in glowing, flowing prose.
