IN 2019, COMICS, GRAPHIC NOVELS, and manga jointly ranked seventh in Baker & Taylor's fiction print sales for U.S. public libraries, according to Barbara Hoffert's annual materials study ("Materially Different," p. 32). Reporting on the graphic format for the first time, the feature found that superhero comics, not surprisingly, occupied the top spot in terms of sales. Notably, expanding subgenres such as literary, historical, and women's fiction also boasted strong sales figures. Diamond Comics Distribution recently announced that in the direct comic book market, graphic novels sales dipped by two percent in 2019, but the overall print sales of comics and graphic novels together increased by 2.23 percent over 2018.
